Backwater Valve Repair

Keep the Sewer Where It Belongs

A backwater valve, sometimes called a backflow preventer, is fitted to your main sewer line. It lets waste water flow out of your home as normal, but closes automatically the moment the city sewer becomes overwhelmed during a storm, stopping sewage from pushing back up into your basement.

If your basement has ever flooded with sewage, or your street is on a combined sewer, a backwater valve is the single highest-value thing you can do to protect your home. It costs a fraction of one flood clean-up.

We install, replace, service and repair backwater valves across Toronto and the GTA, and we can walk you through the City of Toronto subsidy application.

How the Installation Works

We start with a CCTV inspection of your main drain to confirm the pipe condition and locate the best position for the valve, usually just inside the foundation wall. We then cut a small access pit in the basement floor, fit the valve with its inspection cover, backfill and finish the concrete. Most installations are completed in a single day and the access cover sits flush so the floor stays usable.

The City of Toronto Subsidy

The City of Toronto Basement Flooding Protection Subsidy Program reimburses homeowners up to $3,400 toward backwater valve installation, sump pump installation and severance of the storm sewer or foundation drain connection. The work must be done by a licensed plumber and a permit is required. We provide the invoice, permit and documentation the application needs, and we can talk you through the form.

Repair and Servicing

A backwater valve is a mechanical device and it needs occasional attention. Debris can hold the flap open, the hinge can wear, and the gate can seize if it is never exercised. We recommend an inspection once a year, ideally before spring. If you have an older valve that has never been checked, we will open it, clean it, test the gate and replace worn parts rather than sell you a whole new unit.

FAQ

Do I really need a backwater valve?

If your basement has ever taken on sewage, or your street floods in heavy rain, yes. It is the most cost-effective protection available and it usually qualifies for the City subsidy.

How much does installation cost?

It depends on the depth of the main drain and the floor construction. We give you a written price after the camera inspection, before any work starts, and the City subsidy covers a substantial part of it.

Will it damage my basement floor?

We cut a small access pit only, then backfill and finish the concrete. The inspection cover sits flush with the floor.

How often should it be serviced?

Once a year, ideally before the spring thaw. Debris in the chamber is the most common reason a valve fails to close.

Can you repair a valve someone else installed?

Yes. We service and repair all common makes, and we would rather clean and re-seat a working valve than replace it unnecessarily.
